On a recent trip to Santa Barbara, we took my brother and his wife to a Sommelier tasting at Fess Parker Winery & Vineyards. It was a treat to discover Rodney's Vineyard Syrah - a complex and well balanced wine with great aging potential.

The Sommelier Curated Tasting Experience was really something special.

Though the wines we started with were the classic selections, as we discussed our likes, dislikes, and areas we hope to learn more Dana, our guide for this adventure, would pull out something different to try. Or she would suggest tasting one of the cheeses before a particular wine. We really had a tasty, educational time!

Winemaker Notes:

"Our single vineyard and small lot releases enable us to deliver some of our finest expressions of Syrah by concentrating on specific vineyards, clonal selections or techniques. Our estate vineyard, named in memory of Fess' late son-in-law, was planted in 1989 to predominantly Rhone varietal types. The wines from this vineyard have consistently been some of the most expressive and highly acclaimed in our portfolio."

Wine Notes:

  • Winery: Fess Parker
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Varietal/Blend: 100% Syrah
  • Fermenting/Aging: 20 months in 100% French oak (52% new)

Tasting Notes:

Full-bodied, complex with a ruby color and light pink rim. Sweet aromas of blackberry and plum. Balanced layers of flavor cherry, anise, chocolate, vanilla - each sip offering something new.  Long, mouth-watering finish.

Of the wines offered during our tasting, this was the one that was universally liked by the whole group.  We left with two bottles - one for now and one to forget about in our cellar for a while...

I'm really excited to try this one with some smoked meats this summer!

I love all things wine: drinking it, learning about how it's made, visiting where it's made, pairing with foods! I'm naturally curious, so back in 2013 during my first trip to Europe when I tasted my first glass of fantastic Rioja, I was hooked and had to start learning all I could on the subject. After a long time of friends asking me for wines to try or activities to add to their vacation itineraries, I decided to start a blog to write it all down. And that is how Wine, Dine, and Roam began!
